More about the Owner

IMG_2491-600pxHello, my name is Mark Thomas and thank you for visiting my website. I am the passionate owner of a small business located in Hot Springs Village that provides home maintenance and repair services for Senior Citizens and the physically challenged. The company name Jack Handy is a play on the words “jack of all trades handyman”.  My goal is to provide you with a trusted and responsible source for the care and well-being of your home.

Some of my attributes include over 40 years of experience in the construction industry from Homes to High Rise, Building Construction degree from Texas A&M University, lifetime member Association of Certified Handyman Professionals, Home Advisor Screened and Approved, Home Advisor Five Star Rated, Home Advisor Elite Service Provider.

I will never forget my first construction job, summer was coming and my parents decided to have a pool installed so we could use it on the first day.  By the middle of May, the pool was almost complete and the concrete deck around the edge of the pool was the last item to install.  The pool deck crew arrived early in the morning with six concrete trucks ready. This particular day was scorching and the concrete was set up fully before the crew could finish it properly and the result looked pretty awful. That meant the concrete had to be broken out with sledgehammers, hauled away, and replaced with new concrete.

The following weekend the crew showed up to demo the concrete they had previously installed.  After watching several men swing 20-pound sledgehammers, I thought to myself “Hey, I can do that” and so during their lunch break I picked up a sledgehammer (keep in mind I am not quite 12 years old and I probably weighed all of 80 pounds soaking wet) and gave it my all.  When their lunch break was over I continued working, I thought it was fun and kept going.  At the end of the day the foreman approached me and asked if I wanted a job.  I declined at first because I wasn’t old enough to drive and had no other means. The foreman stated if I could work like that every day, he would pick me up and drop me off at my parent’s home.  Well, 39 years later I am still in construction…go figure.

I have held numerous titles in the construction industry over the 40 years, including water boy and all the way to vice president of construction.  I still have a picture of the very first home I built for General Homes in the Kenswick Subdivision off fm1960 in Houston, TX as a Construction Superintendant.  I was consistently in the top 5 Superintendents in the Houston area for years when measured against both quality and time to complete.  It wasn’t that I could manage numerous subcontractors any better than my cohorts; it was simply the fact I was good with my hands and could do so many small repairs and punch list items myself.  On the contrary, the other superintendents had to schedule items for completion which took additional time.

I am forever grateful and humbled by the scores of individuals who shared their knowledge and wisdom with me over the years.  I sincerely thank each and every one of them.
